The African American Leadership
Seminars began in 1985 when 35 prominent leaders came together at the
Doral Resort in
Miami
,
Florida
. It was hosted and co-sponsored by the late tennis star and
humanitarian, Arthur Ashe. The late Tom Skinner and Barbara
Williams-Skinner were co-founders and facilitators. Under the direction
of Barbara Williams-Skinner, Skinner Leadership Institute, Inc., a
nonprofit leadership development organization coordinates the seminars.
The result has been a dynamic intergenerational gathering of
accomplished and emerging individuals with broadly divergent policy
perspectives. This legacy of ideas and friendships has produced
significant projects and joint ventures among many of the participants.
Each African American Leadership Seminar seeks
to build unity and dialogue on pressing public policy issues among
veteran and younger African American leaders from the corporate,
government, religious, and non-profit arenas. For twenty years, an
environment has been created for building trusting relationships,
personal renewal and mutual support on personal and professional
challenges faced by leaders. Through various seminars and issue
briefings during each session, participants become better prepared to
address current issues within their individual organizations. Four
significant accomplishments of the African American Leadership Seminars
include:
- Year
2000 Goals to measure educational, political and economic progress
among African Americans, now being updated as the Year 2016 Goals;
- The
Ethics of Sharing: Negotiating Diversity In a Multicultural Society,
a new moral and public policy framework for the global community;
- A
dynamic environment for dialogue on key public policy issues; and
- A
leadership network that promotes trust and confidentiality among
colleagues
